The History of the USA and Russian relations were most of the time critical. Since in the two world wars, the relations between the two countries were not in a good position. Specially after the Truman doctrine, the USA worked hard to stop the spreading of communism around the world. Also during the cold war period, the relations between the two countries were hardly damaged.
However, in recent years, the USA and Russia tried to refresh their relations specially under the Trump administration.
But with the appointment of the new president in the USA, it seems like the relations between the two countries will face a hard time. In this post, I will share top 5 facts about the USA recent action against Russia, imposing sanctions.
1. Who is Alexei Navalny?
Alexei Navalny is the opposition figure in Russia and an anti-corruption activist. He has deeply criticized the Russian government.
Navalny was poisoned with a Novichok nerve agent last august 2020. After a serious time to recover, Navalny was returned to Russia from Germany.
Alexei Navalny was sentenced to two years and eight months in a prison immediately after he returned to Russia.
The Moscow government was criticized by many people that should responsible for Navalny’s poisoning.
2. What about the USA sanctions?
The Biden administration announced sanctions over 7 senior Russian officials and 14 entities involved in biological and chemical weapons, coordinating with the EU last Tuesday.
The sanctions imposed by the USA will block the access to financial and other assets in USA for seven senior members of the Russian government except President Vladimir Putin.
3. What is the significant point?
The sanctions against Russia are very symbolic because this is the first red notice from the Biden administration against Russia.
According to many experts, this action signals about an initial step of a serious agenda against Russia which can be tough. Also, the Biden administration will treat Russia differently than the Trump administration which he needed to improve ties. Also, the recent action of the USA against Russia will demonstrate practically the USA’s “America is back” policy.
4. What are the reasons for sanctions?
According to many sources, there are some reasons for imposing sanctions on Russia by the USA. The top reason was poisoning Alexei Navalny. But there are some other reasons affect such as Russian cyber-attacks, offer bounties for the Taliban to kill American soldiers in Afghanistan and Russian involvements in USA presidential elections.
5. Russian reaction
Russia denies the allegations for them about the poisoning Navalny. Also, Russia considered USA action as a “hostile anti-Russian attack.
Also, the foreign minister of Russia, Sergei Lavrov said, “Nobody canceled one of the rules of diplomacy – reciprocity”.
As for many exports, the upcoming years will not good for USA Russian relations. USA still considering many more sanctions against Russia. However, the future is uncertain which can be a tough time for USA and Russia ties.
